Today’s Bible reading is James chapter 3

(Read the entire New Testament in 2014 by reading only one chapter each day)

A sure sign of spirituality is the control of the tongue. If we can control our tongues, then we are able to demonstrate spiritual maturity. If we give evidence of the Spirit’s rule in our speech life, it is also proof of God’s complete rule in all of our life. The tongue is very powerful. No person can control it without the help of God’s Holy Spirit. Just like a large ship is controlled by a small rudder, or a large horse is controlled by a small bit, the tongue is small but lethal. The tongue is a destructive fire that can devastate churches, families, and communities. The tongue is set on fire of hell. How many of us have said things we regret? Most of us know all too well how damaging our tongues can be. Wherever you find a conflict or a problem on the earth you will most definitely find a problem with the tongue. James 3:16 says, “For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.” But James goes on to say, “But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.” (James 3:17-18 NLT)

Prayer: Dear Father, forgive us of our sinful speech, and may You fill us with Your Holy Spirit and control our tongue. In Jesus name. Amen.”
