Today’s Bible reading is 2 Corinthians chapter 9
(Read the entire New Testament in 2014 by reading only one chapter each day)
“But this I say, He which sows sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which sows bountifully shall reap also bountifully.” (2 Corinthians 9:6)
To illustrate a principle in giving Paul borrows an image from agriculture. A farmer who sows a few seeds will get a small crop, but a farmer who sows liberally will get an abundance. The amount of the gift must be determined in each person’s heart. We should not be reluctant to give, nor should we give in response to pressure. God is pleased when we give willingly and joyfully from our hearts. Giving is an act of faith. When we give we are illustrating our dependence on God to meet our needs. Paul said, “But my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)
Three blessings will occur when we give. First, our gift will be a blessing to the one who receives it. Second, God will be praised on account of our gift, and He loves a cheerful giver. Third, you will be blessed because the Bible says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
Prayer: “Dear Father, May we always be generous as You are generous, and may we continuously give You thanks for Your indescribable gift! In Jesus name. Amen.”
