Today’s Bible reading is I Corinthians chapter 10
(Read the entire New Testament in 2014 by reading only one chapter each day)
“Therefore let anyone who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (I Corinthians 10:12-13 ESV)
Overconfidence can lead to sin as it did with the children of Israel. We must avoid overconfidence so that we do not fall into the trap of sin and end up overthrown. Don’t say, “That will never happen to me.” Some who thought this fell into temptation. Paul feared that even he could become a spiritual castaway (I Corinthians 9:27). Don’t think that because of your position in church, or your calling or experience that you could never fall into sin. The Israelites had the experience of God’s glory in a cloud by day a fire by night. They drank water from the Rock and the Rock represents Christ. They experienced the miracle of God parting the Red Sea, and yet many of them fell into sexual immortality. Some fell into the sin of idolatry. Some murmured, a sin which led to their being destroyed. Who are we to think it is not possible for us to displease God and come under His judgment? Temptation is common to each of us for we are all human and under the curse of sin. But God is faithful to us in temptation and will not allow us to be tempted above our ability. God always, through Jesus Christ provides a way of escape in temptation. When you are in temptation look for the exit sign, trust in God and Jesus will give you the victory!
Prayer: “Our Father in heaven, deliver us from evil, in Jesus name. Amen.”
