Why we do what we do.

The name “Touch of Hope” is derived from biblical accounts where Jesus’ touch brought hope and healing. There are many accounts like the following where Jesus’ personal and intimate touch reveals the tenderness of God towards our wounds. Jesus touched blind eyes, deaf ears and dumb lips. He touched diseased, deformed, demonized and even dead bodies. One woman touched the hem of His garment and she was instantly healed! Mathew records that Jesus touched a man with a serious skin disease and His touch brought hope to an otherwise hopeless situation…

“When He had come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him. And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one; but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.””
(Matthew 8:1-4 NKJV)

The man in our story was broken. Perhaps he had heard about Jesus healing others, or maybe even witnessed Jesus’ power to perform miracles. Maybe he listened to Jesus’ preaching and became convinced of His power. No doubt he examined the ministry of Jesus to the point that he was confident in Christ’s ability. Whatever this man knew about Jesus it drove him to come to Jesus with the greatest request of his life! None of us want to admit that we are broken. We don’t mind helping others but it is difficult for us to ask for help for ourselves. The truth is we are all helpless without God. But it seems we’d rather struggle in problems rather than turn to God for relief. We can bring our pain to God because He is willing to hear us and heal our brokenness. He alone is able to mend our hurts. At the end of the day sin is to blame for all our problems. Leprosy is a picture of our sin. Lepers were social outcasts that had to go around yelling “unclean.” What a miserable existence! What Jesus did for this man in the physical realm He is also able to do for us in the spiritual! A touch of hope will transform our lives forever!
